Other Great Freeware Games
While RJB Software has many great freeware games that we all love, and how we keep mentioning other good freeware titles in random topics, i thought I would create a topic for people to discuss other spectacular freeware.
One that i totally recommend, (and have been totally addicted to) is Little Fighter 2. It kind of mixes Final Fight with Street Fighter. I believe the website is http://www.lf2.net

Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari) is an excellent 2D platformer with a great plot and memorable characters. It's worth playing through two or more times, as there is an optional extended end game with an alternate ending and multiple weapon upgrade choices that dramatically affect gameplay. I would recommend at least playing through twice, going for the standard ending the first time, and trying for the extended ending on the second run. The game also features excellent SNES style pixel art and a superb soundtrack. As a whole, Doukutsu Monogatari is better than most commercial platformer games. It was created by one guy over the course of 5 years, and the level of detail is evident throughout.
Yes, Cave Story's got to be one of the best freeware games around for some time... If you've not played it, you very much need to!

There's one game I just downloaded, a LOT like lego, but suprisingly not! I belive the link to the main page is: http://www.blockland.us/blockland ! The game is called "Blockland" as the name of the link suggests. They are going to release a retail version soon, but they say that they will leave the free-ware version up and running. What really is unique about this game is that you move as though it was a First person shooter-type game and it has online play, so you and your friends can build together, and it even has a built-in chatting system for other players to use (push "t" to then begin typing)! There are also (On 1 or 2 of the levels) you can pick up a few weapons, such as a bow & arrow (It even has a quiver to go with it! ) and, of course, you can pick up bricks (Sometimes windows too) and then place them on another brick or a brick base. If you want more fun with this game, at the website there is 2 extra levels you can download at the homepage, under "Download", but then you have to cut / paste them to the correct folders, wich can be a HUGE pain . Oh, and check in the forums for some hints on moding and designing new maps, and there are a few finished maps there, somewhere. It is a bit of a pain to download for dial-up users, as it is about 9 megs (I know; I also have dial-up ). All in all, it is worth a try, but if you have dial-up, don't bother, unless you kinda like building or first-person games. The game is great; but that is my opinion.
freeware
IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem) is in my opinion, one of the best RPGs ever created. it has the uncanny ability to make you love it and hate it at the same time though...

A GREAT game, wich is the sequel to a game I'm sure you've heard of: Liero AI! Cool new features include: Online play (), WAY more maps, better graphics, MUCH much more wepons (The original had 40; this one has a woping 74! ), and some different terain. Try it if you like fighting games, or games like Liero. (NOTE: this one is not a DOS game (Thankfully!!)) Oh, and I assure you, this is not some cheap knock-off of the original . Oh, and Ryan: is "Worms 2" any good? I saw it on your desktop picture you posted, and on the site I downloaded this from, it talked a little about the "Worms" series. I see you have the original Liero, too. How did you get that cool icon? It only comes with no icon, I think...Did you make it ?
I tried Liero AI a while back, as well as another Liero remake... And I have to say, I was heavily unimpressed. Both games played very badly, and had major flaws in their physics... But maybe that one's been improved since then? I'd love to see a Windows-based game that's as good as the original, since getting sound working on newer computers seems awkward. As for the icon, it comes from the Wormhole level editor for Liero.
Oh, and if you've not played the Worms games, just go get yourself Worms: Armageddon right away! They're about the most enduringly fun multiplayer games ever made, and W:A (a later version of Worms 2) is still being improved and updated (which is slightly odd, since after the release of W:A, Team 17 released Worms World Party, which was a further slight improvement on the engine, but then instead of continuing to update that version of the game, they just carried on updating the previous version).

I'm not quite sure wich of the Lieros is better, since I (unfortunetly) couldn't get the original to work on my XP . Did you have trouble? Anyways, I have to search for Worms: Armageddon now, so see you later .
EDIT: OK, why is it not free?? Only the demo is! The homepage also says it's 23 megabytes! I can't download something that'll take 3-4 hours (I have dial-up )!

Perhaps they didn't need to update Worms World Party, due to it already being a great game to begin with. : D I have WWP on my other computer, and it's a lot of fun, and has a huge amount of variety. It's the last good Worms game to date. For some reason, they decided to make the following Worms game in 3D, completely ruining the gameplay. Now, I see that they are just coming out with a new one, titled Worms 4: Mayhem. Once again, they went with 3D gameplay. : \

To be honest, I'm not really spending much time playing games at the moment... It's been a while now since the last big freeware release, and I've been working quite hard on a lot of things (which I'm sure I don't have to name! ).Aloshi wrote:Hey Ryan, what is currently your favorite free, somewhat small-sized game? A bit too specific?
Not bad, that Mono. I would prefer a better game, though...
Anyways, I found GREAT a mod for the earlier mentioned BlockLand .
Name: Return To Blockland (RTB)
Size: 25 megs, or so
Quality: 9.2/10. Makes BL 85% more fun.
Cons: Still lags a lot at times, servers crash a lot sometimes.
Pros: GREAT improvments, 10-15 new features, has 90% of the players.
URL: http://www.mocheeze.com/rtb (Has a forum & a live chat!)
ENJOY!
Note:THIS GAME ROX YOUR SOCKS!!!!! Note 2: extreme use of lol.

Galgameth gave me a great game, that I think was freeware....
I think it was called Lost Labyrinth.
Basically you had to find your way through various different levels of dungeons, thrashing everything it your path.
Very addictive....-
Download its various versions from http://www.lostlabyrinth.com

...Wow, I was totally unaware of this version of Lost Labyrinth... I play the version at http://laby.toybox.de/...
Actually, apart from one being written in PureBASIC and one in BlitzBASIC, I can't find what their relationship is, offhand.
{Investigates}
EDIT: Okay, found this at the FAQ about the two versions:
Hmm... You'd have thought that giving them different subtitles or something would be a good way to make sure they're more distinguishable from one another.

EDIT: Okay, found this at the FAQ about the two versions:
It seems that the version you've linked to, filseld2000, is the PureBASIC one, but apparently, the BlitzBASIC one is still the recommended version for Windows users.Frank Malota wrote:2.3. What's the difference between the BlitzBasic and PureBasic version?
A while ago I've tried, together with a fellow programmer, to create a cross-plattform version of Lost Labyrinth that would run under Windows and Linux; we chose PureBasic as programming language, because it was quite similar to BlitzBasic, the programming language used to create the original program. So Markus (my fellow programmer) programmed the complete game anew in PureBasic; unfortunately, I was never quite able to wrap my head around his PureBasic code, and the game had graphical glitches under Windows (the gamespeed was also quite slow with Windows, although the program runs fine under Linux). So we decided to split the two versions: Markus continues the PureBasic version for Linux OS, and I concentrate solely on the BlitzBasic version for the Windows OS. In the meantime, some game elements were implemented differently in the PureBasic version (other GUI, drag&drop-style inventory with quick acess slots, other traits & special levels, etc.), so IMHO the PureBasic version evolves slowly into a game of its own.
Hmm... You'd have thought that giving them different subtitles or something would be a good way to make sure they're more distinguishable from one another.
Whichever you want - they're both essentially different projects now, but the BlitzBASIC one (at http://laby.toybox.de) is currently the most developed, and apparently the one that runs best under Windows.

It is slightly turn based, but you only recognise it when you are facing a particualy 'nasty' monster eg Dragons etc.... and you can buy things from various peddlers and trades-people ( very PC) should you bump into them....
And I'm not sure wheter there are towns as such, as i haven't completed it yet......

OK, new game: Stick Soldiers II!
You might have heard of it, but this is a great game that has bad graphics, BUT IS *NOT* NEEDED! Has AWSOME gameplay, moddable, and even a map editor! Less that a meg in size, too . Bottom line: GET THIS NOW!
Link to site: http://www.whitespaceunlimited.com. Check their forums and files. Remember to choose the 2nd one. And there is also a link to the shareware, ss3 which is not yet out.
I have made some edits to the game (Mostly raising ammo of a few weapons and new bot names and chat). And I also have a fairly descent map if anyone wants to try it. NOTE: there are a LOT of console commands to this game! A few (In small size for those who do not care, but they are useful):
God - God mode. Invincibility. Useful...
give all - All weapons and armor!
give head: This May be useful if someone hits you and you lose your head. Yes, it can happen.
give health - Full health.
And a link to a post on their forums with all controls and console commands and editing things: http://sticksoldier.4.forumer.com/index ... owtopic=10
Remember the mapping commands to open (Editor) and save, as they will be handy when you get bored with the normal playing field!
